Turning the tables on population ageing: Innovations for policy and practice

The Australian Institute for Population Ageing Research (AIPAR) has been developed within UNSW as an umbrella for research initiatives focused on demographic transition. Directed by Professor John Piggott, it aims to be world class in its programs. It is unique globally in incorporating research teams covering health, labour, economic, financial and technology related issues by harnessing expertise from the fields of business, social sciences, engineering, medicine and the built environment.

With more than a quarter of Australians over 65 years of age by 2050, the need to manage and resource population ageing is of national significance. AIPAR recognises that business, government and the not-for-profit sector are key stakeholders in the success of the Institute. AIPAR works closely with industry leaders, including corporate and government partners the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, PricewaterhouseCoopers Australia and Australian government agencies. In conjunction with these partners, AIPAR undertakes research and stimulates debate about the challenges raised by global population ageing, develops ideas for new products, formulates policy proposals and encourages partnerships with other research institutions in Australia and overseas. One of AIPAR’s current initiatives is the production of a regular Longevity Index, which aims to emphasise the importance of longevity risk and insurance.

Current projects include:

  • ARC funding of $1.2 million from 2008 to 2012 for research into managing longevity risk.
  • ARC/NHMRC funding of $2 million from 2006 to 2010 on research into working longer, as part of the Ageing Well, Ageing Productively initiative.
  • ARC Linkage funding from 2007 to 2010 of $640,000 plus industry support from the Department of Families, Housing and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) for research into the life cycle, labour force heterogeneity, financial status and public support of retirement timing.

AIPAR is headquartered at UNSW’s Kensington Campus, Sydney. Its research strands are:

  • Economy-wide implications of population ageing
  • Public sector support
  • Finance and risk management
  • Workplace and labour markets
  • Health and aged care
  • Infrastructure
  • Ageing and technology

AIPAR is closely affiliated with the:
